In my work I am interested in exploring new ways to capture the human experience through paint. I enjoy finding ways of expressing the human figure in its various emotional states sometimes serene and sometimes anguished. The enigmatic figures and forms appear to be partly human and partly animal, with fluid and melting body parts and limbs. I use energetic brushstrokes to capture the figures that appear to be caught in movement. I work mainly from the imagination and also use photographic source materials of people, athletes and animals caught in motion or frozen in between gestures. I place these figures into a Surrealist landscape reminiscent of Giorgio de Chirico and Salvador Dali, to create nostalgic, dream like spaces. My aim is to create a fusion of the raw power of Francis Bacon’s Expressionism, with Minimalism’s distant coolness. I use the paint to include the texture of the canvas as part of the rawness of the image, with the paint applied thickly in an impasto style and adhering to a simplified monochromatic language of minimal brushstrokes that are reminiscent of calligraphy. I place these forms within a carefully balanced composition to generate a meditative and reflective mood, and a space for the viewer to bring their own personal experiences, thoughts and interpretations to the piece.
